All Vinyl Siding Looks Similar in a Brochure. It Doesn’t Age the Same on Your House.

Here’s something the brochures don’t lead with: the difference between vinyl siding you love for 25 years and vinyl siding you regret in 8 comes down to two things you can’t see from the curb. Panel quality, meaning thickness, UV protection, and color technology. And installation, meaning whether the panels were hung with room to move.

Vinyl expands and contracts more than any other siding as Columbia swings from January ice to August heat. Nail it too tight and it buckles in summer. Skip the right overlaps and wind gets underneath. Use bargain panels and the south-facing wall fades years before the rest of the house. None of this shows up on day one. All of it shows up.

The crew that installed the roof were efficient and thoroughly cleaned up all of the debris. I didn't notice a single nail after they used the magnets throughout the lawn, porch, sidewalk and driveway. The price was very comparable or less than other bids I received. The team reached back promptly and went above and beyond to help me with my inquiry, saving me some money in the process. That level of post-sale care, when they don't need to do anything for you anymore and they still do the thing. That makes me brand loyal. Thanks for your help! I've worked with this company twice, the first time they moved really quickly, completed work within a month from starting. I give them a 5/5 on that work. This second time around we started the quote back in May of 2023, and they completed work on the last week of April of 2024. they get a 1/5 on that one. I understand the storms of last year caused a backlog across the whole industry, and if I had been given a clear timeframe from the beginning I could have decided to either stay with them or go another route. When I was first given an estimate, the goal from our contact there was to be done in 2 months tops, and now I'm finishing this review about a year later as work has been completed and paid. If you have no timeframe for completion, CoMo Premium Exteriors is going to do quality work on your property, and I cannot fault any of the labor that was conducted, but for me, with an insurance claim due to weather with a company that entered receivership, I was very clear in telling them on multiple emails, texts and phone calls, I need this work completed quickly so I can recover depreciation and adjustments before the receivership is done by end of December. These delays are going to cause me to be out of pocket for a long time until the State regulators can close the claim.

Straight Answers to the Vinyl Siding Questions We Hear Most

Is all vinyl siding the same?

Not even close, and this is where quotes get confusing. Vinyl panels vary in thickness (roughly .040 to .055 inches), UV and fade protection, color technology, and wind ratings. A bargain panel and a premium panel can look identical on day one and age completely differently on a sun-facing Columbia wall. When we quote your project, we’ll show you exactly which panel each price buys.

How long does vinyl siding last in the Columbia climate?

Quality vinyl, installed correctly, typically delivers 20 to 30 years here. Our humidity, hail, and big temperature swings are the stress test: cheap panels fade and turn brittle sooner, and badly installed panels of any grade buckle and loosen early. Material grade and installation each carry about half the weight.

Can vinyl siding be painted when it fades?

We don’t recommend it, and we’d rather tell you now than after. Paint on vinyl tends to fail because the panels expand and contract underneath it, and dark colors can trap heat and warp panels. This is vinyl’s honest trade-off: zero painting for decades, but no repainting when the color tires. It’s why panel quality and fade-resistant color technology are worth paying for upfront.

Will insurance cover my hail-damaged vinyl siding?

Often, yes. Hail and wind damage to siding is typically covered by homeowner’s insurance, minus your deductible. The complication with vinyl is matching: if your color or profile is discontinued, a patch repair may be impossible to match, and that can sometimes support replacing full walls instead. We document the damage thoroughly, meet your adjuster on-site, and advocate for a fair outcome.

What’s the difference between vinyl and James Hardie, really?

Price and durability, mostly. Vinyl costs meaningfully less installed, never needs paint, and is the easier panel to live with on a budget. James Hardie fiber cement costs more but resists hail, fire, and extreme temperatures far better, holds richer colors, and typically lasts decades longer. Plenty of Columbia homeowners are well served by either.

Is insulated vinyl worth the extra cost?

For some homes, yes. The foam backing stiffens panels (so walls look flatter and resist dents), quiets outside noise, and adds insulation value to the wall. The premium is real, so it makes the most sense on homes with thin or older wall insulation, or where street noise is a factor. We’ll price standard and insulated side by side so you can judge the difference for your house.

How long does a vinyl siding project take?

Most Columbia homes take 2 to 5 days once materials arrive, depending on the size of the house, the amount of trim detail, and what we find under the old siding.
