Roofing Types

When it comes to selecting materials for a new residential roof or new commercial roof there are many great options.  Every option has pros and cons, but for most people the decision comes down to:

  • Price
  • Length of time you expect to stay in your home
  • HOA rules (if applicable)
  • Desired appearance

When you work with an experience Missouri roofer like CoMo Premium Exteriors, you can rest assured that you are working with a team that provides the information and guidance to help you make an informed decision.  We only install quality products from established and respected manufacturers so you can rest assured that the quality of the product and workmanship go hand-in-hand.

Different Types of Roofing Materials

Architectural Shingles

If you have owned a home for many years you may be familiar with the term “3-Tab Shingles”.  Several times a year we have customers call and ask us, “can you replace 3-tab shingles on my home in Columbia”?  Once the industry standard, these 3-Tab roofing shingles are obsolete and not a great choice.  While they used to be a cheaper option, the 3-Tab roofing shingle have been replaced by Architectural Shingles that are very similar in price and provide many more benefits.

When you install architectural shingles on your Missouri home you benefit from a shingle that is much more substantial than a 3-tab shingle.  Architectural shingles have a thicker base mat, stronger adhesives, and more granules than their old 3-tab cousin.  Beyond being a better manufactured product, architectural shingles also provide dimension to your roof since there are multiple layers of materials adhered to the base; giving it more depth.  In addition to quality and look, architectural shingles also provide stronger wind resistance, greater lifespan, and longer warranties.

Metal Roofing Products in Missouri

Metal roofing options for Missouri homes vary greatly.  Many people have memories of old metal barn roofs with the tips of metal screws running in rows straight down the roof; however, today’s metal roofing for your home can be quite different (and better).  Offered in a variety of color options, metal roofs come in panels with hidden fasteners as well as stone coated metal shingles.

The metal roofing you would want installed on your home may not be the same as metal sheeting you see in your local hardware store. Many big box hardware stores carry a range of metal roofing options, however their lead times and employee knowledge regarding these products can vary greatly. That why it is very important to hire knowledgeable sales representatives like those at CoMo Premium Exteriors who can explain the differences between metal roofing options and provide good advice on what best suits your situation.

Stone Coated Metal Shingles

Stone coated steel roofing is different than metal roofing in two major ways. The first is that instead of being large sheets it is individual shingles; the second difference is that each steel shingle is coated with asphalt. These metal and stone shingles give your home the classic look of an architectural, wood shake, or even slate shingle with the durability of steel.  This shingle option is very durable and the granules are baked onto the shingle during the manufacturing process.  While these shingles will lose some granules over time, that loss will occur much slower than with asphalt shingles. Should the roof be damaged by very large hail, additional granule loss can occur at a faster rate.

Flat Roofs and Roof Coatings

Flat roofs can be found on both residential and commercial buildings throughout Mid-Missouri.  These flat roofs vary from simple 10×10 areas to large commercial complexes.  Flat roofing materials will vary based on the situation, but the most common types are TPO and EPDM.  Both come in large rolls which are overlapped and seemed together using heat, glue, or mechanical fastening.  To better understand all that goes into installing a residential or commercial flat roof in Missouri, contact our office to set an appointment.  We will be sure to provide knowledgeable advice and recommendations.
